The Radio Four Poetry Slam 2007

The Radio Four Slam was held in McHughes at 8pm on Friday 11th May.   There were two rounds in which all the teams competed.  The four poets with the highest marks from those rounds went through to the final poem-off to see who would make it to the semi-finals.  After the results were announced there was an open-mic for a hour.

CWN would like to thank the judges, the competitors, everyone who attended and, especially, our lovely MC, Chloe Poems.

The two poets who will be going to the Semi-finals in Manchester are Gerard McKeown (Ulster) and Brendan Murphy from Galway.

The 10th Brian Moore Short Story Awards was held on Sunday 15th October in the John Hewitt Bar. We are delighted to announce that it was a huge success.

Over 100 people attended and the event went on until near-midnight.

Lionel Shriver spoke very highly of the fifteen short-listed stories she had read; all were of a high creative and literary standard. She was especially pleased, she added, to see that none of the authors dwelt overmuch on the Troubles. There was a fresh and daring range to the stories; set as they were in India, Africa and the Belfast of the past.

The final three stories all stood out and the winners were delighted to have been selected. Meanwhile those shortlisted said that it was very encouraging to have made it so far and that they would be trying again next year!

CWN would like to thank: The John Hewitt Bar, The Ulster Tatler, Blackstaff Press, Lagan Press. the Belfast Telegraph, The Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Belfast City Council for supporting CWN and the Brian Moore Short Story Awards.
